Duphaston: Comprehensive Overview

Duphaston contains the active ingredient dydrogesterone, a progesterone agonist (female sex hormone) that helps reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

Uses:

  • Irregular Menstrual Periods
  • Dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods)
  • Endometriosis
  • Infertility

In combination with estrogen, Duphaston can treat secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods for 6 months or more) and heavy, irregular bleeding.

Precautions:

  • Allergies: Avoid if allergic to dydrogesterone or similar medicines. Symptoms include skin rash, itchy skin, redness, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis: Not recommended for patients with blood vessel blockages.
  • Hormone-Dependent Cancers: Avoid if you have progesterone or estrogen-dependent cancers.
  • Unknown Bleeding: Not recommended for patients with unexplained bleeding.
  • Liver Impairment: May cause liver damage. Contact your doctor if you experience pain in the right upper abdomen, loss of appetite, dark urine, or jaundice.
  • Depression: Not recommended for patients with depression.
  • Porphyria: Avoid if you have porphyria.

Regular self-breast exams are recommended due to an increased risk of breast cancer when used with estrogen.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

  • Pregnancy: Should not be used unless recommended by your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding: Avoid as it passes into breast milk.

How to Use:

  • Dosage: Determined by your doctor. Do not self-medicate.
  • Administration: Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew.

Interactions:

Avoid combining Duphaston with:

  • Epilepsy Medications: carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital (may decrease Duphaston’s effectiveness).
  • HIV Medications: ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir.
  • Herbal Products: St. John’s wort, sage, ginkgo biloba (may decrease Duphaston’s effectiveness).

Inform your doctor about all medications and herbal products you are taking.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, weight gain, breast swelling, anemia, depression, lethargy.
  • Serious: Liver damage (loss of appetite, pain in the right upper abdomen, jaundice), allergy.

Contact your doctor if you experience any side effects.

Warnings:

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • For adult use only.

Duphaston is a versatile medication with numerous applications in women’s health. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new medication.
