Nandrolone, also known as 19-nortestosterone or nandrolone deca, is an anabolic steroid derived from testosterone. It can be produced in small amounts in the human body after intense or extended physical activity.

The synthetic version of nandrolone was developed in 1950, but it became commercially available in 1962 as decanoate under the trade name Deca-Durabolin by Organon Company. It was prescribed for treating postoperative muscle mass loss, osteoporosis, breast cancer, malnutrition, burns, and certain types of anemia.

Due to its chemical structure, nandrolone is minimally affected by aromatase (only 20% of the aromatizing activity of testosterone). However, its main concern is not estrogenic effects but its potent progestogenic activity (20% of progesterone). When binding to progestogenic pituitary receptors, nandrolone increases prolactin production, which is similar to estradiol. To prevent these side effects, prolactin inhibitors (such as cabergoline) should always be available during a nandrolone cycle.

Nandrolone is renowned in sports and bodybuilding for its ability to enhance muscle mass and quality. It promotes protein synthesis, essential for building body mass and strength.
